Cisco serializes almost everything. Here is an output from a switch i have readily available.

32K bytes of flash-simulated non-volatile configuration memory.
Base ethernet MAC Address: 00:30:85:44:2D:00
Motherboard assembly number: 73-4033-07
Power supply part number: 34-0968-01
Motherboard serial number: FAA050400BE
Power supply serial number: NONE
Model revision number: A0
Motherboard revision number: B0
Model number: WS-C3524-PWR-XL-EN
System serial number: FAA0506W0SN
Configuration register is 0xF

When speaking of the system serial, this will be the serial on the back of the switch, used for smartnet. The motherboard is only serialized for Cisco's use.
