DHCP exam question

Postby db77 on Thu Jul 01, 2010 4:43 pm

I had a question that asked what a router does with a dhcp request from a client on a lan off ofo one of it's fa interfaces and with a dhcp server located on another lan somewhere on the other side of the router.

The answer was the router drops the packets?
Why? Does the DHCP server have to be on the same subnet as the host in order for it to receive the dhcp broadcast reuqest?

Hello db77!

As long as there is no ip helper address konfigured in the router, the router will do nothing (drop) with the request. Was there any configuration provided inside the question?

Aloha db77,

The answer yes. Routers do not forward broadcasts. So, if you have a DHCP server on LAN 1 (F0/0) and the clients on LAN 2 (F0/1), you will need to use the "ip helper-address" command on the router interface facing the clients.
